Resume Rescue - How to Write a Strong Objective Statement That Gets You More Interviews

The objective statement is the most misused - and often abused - section in a resume. And that's a shame, since it's right at the top, and sets the tone for the rest of resume.

The mistake most people make is focusing on your own wants and needs, rather than the employer's need.

I can't tell you how bad it is to write about what you want to get out of the job, things like: "A rich and rewarding job that allows me to grow while utilizing my strengths" (Yes, people really do write objectives like this!)

Resume Rescue - How to Write a Strong Objective Statement That Gets You More Interviews

Here's another real-life example from a resume that came across my desk: "A personally satisfying position that exhibits all of my potential. Expansion on my experience combining FIX Protocol with TCP/IP and Front End connectivity including implementation of the Network, client through server. This includes managing new and existing projects that will increase liquidity for the firm and resourcefulness of the Network and User-base that I maintain."

As a hiring manager, I'd read that and think, "Hiring this person will be like taking on a second job! He wants me to ensure that he is personally satisfied, reaching his potential, and expanding his experience? I don't even know anything about him yet. I need someone to fill a void I currently have -- not a prima donna who is making demands before he begins. No, thanks!"

Save demands like these (even requests) and salary requirements for AFTER the interview process and you've received an offer. That's when you're in a position to ask for what you want.

The fix: Make your objective statement a single, focused statement that "hooks" your next boss by describing your best qualification. It should only be about the industry and the job function that you are interested in.

Here's an example of an effective Objective Statement: "A c++ programming position, in the financial services industry, using my 10 years experience in order-state management for Bond Trading."

Imagine yourself as the hiring manager. Can't you just see that person working for you? "Oh yes," you think, "This person can help me, they know what they are talking about, and I want that person's expertise on my team!" That's what you want them to come away with.

The purpose of your resume as a whole is to intrigue the reader enough to call you in for an interview. So your resume should keep 'em reading, by giving them what they're hoping to find -- a candidate who is looking to fill their need.

One-Minute Makeover: First ask yourself, do you need an objective statement? Only career changers and recent graduates do. If you are looking for a similar job, in the same industry you are currently in, leave it off.

If you do need an objective statement, make sure yours mentions these 3 things and nothing more: The type (and level) of position you're aiming at; the specific industry (if it differs from the one you're in); and your strongest qualifications and skills for that job.

Weaknesses In Job Interviews - How To Answer Interview Questions About Your Weaknesses

"How do I answer questions about my weaknesses in job interviews?" is the most common question we're asked as interviewers.

It's also a common job interview question so you're right to want to be prepared for it.

Few people are so here's your chance to get ahead of your competition.

Weaknesses In Job Interviews - How To Answer Interview Questions About Your Weaknesses

We interview for a living and here's our advice.

When asked about your weaknesses remember to talk about something you've perceived as a 'weakness' but worked hard to overcome or something which you find harder than others but can still do, using some strategy or another.

And make sure it's not something central to the role!

Good answers might be:

For a job where organisation is important, but not central:

"I'd like to be more naturally organised like my manager who remembers everything and never has to write anything down. Although my memory's not as good as hers I am able to keep on top of things by using a to-do list and keeping a diary so I know where I am with my work all the time".

For a job where working as part of a team is important:

"I prefer working in teams to working alone. Although I'm able to stay focussed and complete the task, I prefer the sharing of ideas and achievements which happens when you work in teams. Some of my colleagues work better alone and this is something I am working on to improve".

Notice how, with a little forethought, you can give your 'weakness' a positive spin? In this answer, you're showing that you work well in teams, which is a quality most employers look for.

Finally, never identify emotional states or personality traits as weaknesses, only skills, experience, knowledge or preferences. Don't ever say you get stressed, bored, demotivated, angry, upset etc.

People have said this in interviews with us. Although, as employers, we might accept shortcomings in people's skills, experience and knowledge, few of us want to take on employees with attitude issues!

Job Interviews: How to Answer "Who is Your Hero?"

A fairly common job interview question is, "Who is your hero, and why?"

The intent of this question is to find out more about you -- your character, personality, and values. If you anticipate this question and prepare your answer in a way that shows the traits you most admire in others -- and more importantly, that you have in common with them -- you'll turn this question into another great opportunity to blast your competition out of the water!

But there's a right way, AND a wrong way to answer this question.

Job Interviews: How to Answer "Who is Your Hero?"

Here's the best way to develop your answer.

First, decide which personal traits would be best to highlight for the position. For example, if you're applying for a job as a firefighter or police officer, you'd want to highlight traits such as courage and integrity.

Here are some other traits that employers are looking for: leadership, honesty, creativity, dedication, generosity.

Next, craft your answer to include the traits you want to highlight.

Be careful about naming a celebrity, sports star or politician! Why? Because interviewers are people, and people have attitudes and biases that you'll be unaware of.

Suppose you named Lance Armstrong as your hero because of his total commitment to success and amazing ability to overcome challenges and obstacles. Most people would have no problem with that. But what if the person interviewing you is a woman who thinks Lance is a total jerk for putting his career ahead of his family and leaving his wife for a rock star? It might not be fair, but this interviewer may think you are a jerk for admiring Lance! Do you think she's going to hire a jerk?

People have opinions about people they think they know. You won't know what those opinions are. So the safest bet is to name a hero they can't possibly know or object to.

Sample Answer:

"My hero is my father. He taught me to always do the right thing; to value others and help them whenever I can; to plan ahead, work hard and do my best in any situation; to be a lifelong learner; to smile and keep a sense of humor even when things get tough; and to love, support and protect my family."

Remember, all interview questions can provide an opportunity to highlight not only your qualifications, but also your character and values. Plan ahead, give great answers, and win your dream job!

How to Make Your Boyfriend Happy - The One Thing You Must Do and One Thing You Must Avoid

"How do you make your boyfriend happy?"

One way or another, you'll end up asking that question which has been asked by women from all four corners of the globe. Whether it's your first long-term and serious relationship or it's your 15th, you want it to be satisfying and fulfilling for both you and your boyfriend.

After all, if you're thinking only about how you can be happy inside the relationship and you're shoving your man's needs to the side, it will only be a matter of time before he leaves.

How to Make Your Boyfriend Happy - The One Thing You Must Do and One Thing You Must Avoid

Now here's the bad news - asking your boyfriend what would make him happy won't cut it. How come? Here's why - men aren't emotional creatures. They're the sex who'd use raw facts and figures rather than their instincts or 'feel' when dealing with different situations.

That's precisely the reason why asking them straight away won't do. They have a hard time dealing with their own emotions...let alone put them in words! BUT that doesn't mean there is nothing you can do about it.

Through thousands of polls and interviews along with the help of psychologists and relationship doctors, finally, it has been figured out what is the Number One thing a man looks for in a relationship.

How To Make Your Boyfriend Happy - One Thing A Girlfriend MUST Do
I want this to be straightforward - a happy girlfriend keeps a boyfriend happy.

You've read that right. If you show how your man how joyful you are being his girlfriend, he'll stay. It's NOT about your looks or your openness to sex (though these 2 still matter). It's ultimately how you behave when you're together. For a man, his formula for measuring how worthwhile a relationship is if his girlfriend compliments him, smiles when he's around, etc.

How To Make Your Boyfriend Happy - What You MUST Avoid Like Plague
With that in mind, there is one thing you should avoid doing at all costs...Nagging.

Nagging whenever he makes a slight and insignificant error shows that you don't appreciate for who he is and that you're NOT happy being with him. It's of little wonder why nagging is the fastest and deadliest killer of a man's love and interest for a woman.

By the way, did you know that so many women make their own lives and relationships harder than they need to be by not learning the basic foundations of how men view love, connection, attraction and relationships?

Interviews - Strengths and Weaknesses

When considering Strengths and Weaknesses in the world of Job Interviews we are most often considering the two common questions, What is your Greatest Weakness and What is your Greatest Strength.

When working with candidates that are preparing for interviews these are strangely enough the area where we most often end up with rambling, incoherent and unfocused answers or the 1000 yd stare into the distance.

Let us think about the objectives from both sides of the table. Your objectives are to impress the interviewer with your skills, knowledge, capabilities and suitability for the position or to put it another way, get a job offer. The objectives of the interviewer are similar but in reverse and they are enhanced by the fact that a hiring mistake can be expensive, not only in the time it takes to find out that there is a mistake but also in the costs involved in finding a replacement down the line.

Interviews - Strengths and Weaknesses

The logic behind these questions is as much to see how you handle them as  to the answers that you give. So with that in mind we will start with the question about weakness. Why would any interviewer expect someone to give an answer that places them in a bad light, you would be surprised at how many candidates make this mistake without considering their actions and the results that stem from it.

It is OK to have a weakness just make sure that it does not impact on your ability to do the job. Explaining the weakness may be handled in a number of ways, a couple of examples are:

Using a strength as a weakness is very common and needs to be used carefully so that you do not appear rehearsed. This is typically something like attention to detail but most interviewers have heard this far too many times.

Demonstrate a past weakness or deficiency that does not relate directly to the job, this could be as simple as not having learnt a programming language or reporting tool that may have hurt you in the past but it now gives you the opportunity to demonstrate how you overcame that by taking classes in your own time.

A strength on the other hand should be directly related to the position you are interviewing for and explained in context with a story if at all possible. You can sometimes link both the strength and weakness in a single answer thus taking away the need for the second question.

If the opportunity arises and you may even want to consider raising both of these issues in advance. When answering an earlier question there may be a moment where you have the chance to mention your strength/weakness. For example management candidates are often asked how they might handle a situation with an employee who needs to be counseled. You could explain how you would deal with this and state that dealing one on one with employees is a strength you have developed although in the early stages one might have considered it a weakness but time and mentoring earlier in your career have now turned the situation around for you.

In summary, strengths and weaknesses are questions that can be answered in so many different ways and in this article we have only touched on the subject. Be positive and consider your words carefully. As a manager of mine once said God gave you two ears and one mouth so you can listen twice as much as you talk, a piece of advice I cheerfully pass on.

Good hunting

UK Visa Interview Tips

Lot of people desire to get settled in United kingdom but lack of right knowledge, which creates problems. You need to go through the interview process in order to avail the UK immigration visa. The interview is conducted by a UK visa consulate officer. The time period of interview process varies according to the performance of person at the introductory part of interview. The person is judged by visa officer according to his confidence as to how he creatively answers to the questions.

There are certain visa interview tips which should be helpful to the visa applicant:

1) The applicant needs to approach the visa consulate officer with confidence and positivity. If you are leaving a current job, mention the reason of leaving with positive intention and the opportunity that can enhance your career prospects.

UK Visa Interview Tips

2) Outline the valid reason for leaving the native country and your usefulness in UK. If you are from a technical background do mention that you would add tremendous value to the UK economy.

3) Give at least two references working presently in your organization. Give all the answers in a proper manner and to the point. Do not forget to describe the work profile in the companies with whom you have worked.

4) Try to answer all his questions without hesitation in the first attempt, which creates a positive impact in the mind of visa consulate officer. Try to reach before the scheduled time of interview and review all the answers for possible questions which will be asked by interviewer.

5) Approach the Visa consulate officer with a confident smile. Opt to wear formal dress at the time of interview which often impresses the interviewer, as he or she belongs to United Kingdom where formals are more appreciated in official meetings or interviews.

6) The most important attribute would be honesty in answering. If you try to deceive the officer you are more likely to get caught and that may end all your prospects of the UK Visa.

7) Try to show a strong Financial capability. But do remember it needs to be truth and not fabricated.
